Abstract
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of Tai-chi exercise program on ability of lower extremities exercise and mood status in elderly women with osteoarthritis.

Methods : This study was one group pre-post test design with repeated measures. The experimental group of 16 patients were selected through convenience sampling from patients in M hospital located in Busan city. The subjects received Tai-chi exercise twice a week for 60 minutes for eight weeks. To evaluate the effect of the Tai-chi exercise, ability of lower extremities exercise(flexibility of lower extremities, muscle strength) and mood status were measured at before, six and eight weeks after program. The data was analyzed through SPSS 10.0 Program for descriptive statistics and repeated measures ANOVA.

Results : The elderly women with osteoarthritis who were participated the Tai-chi exercise program significantly increased flexibility of lower extremities at 6 weeks(p=0.022) and 8 weeks(p£¼0.001). There was a statistically significant difference after practice of Tai-chi exercise program in several estimates(knee extension, knee flexion, ankle dorsiflexion, and ankle plantarflexion). The elderly women with osteoarthritis who were participated the Tai-chi exercise program significantly increased muscle strength of lower extremities at 8 weeks(p£¼0.001). There was a statistically significant difference after practice of Tai-chi exercise program in several estimates : Knee extensor(p£¼0.001), Knee flexor(p=0.006), Ankle dorsiflexor(p=0.004), and ankle plantarflexor (p=0.015). The elderly women with osteoarthritis who were participated the Tai-chi exercise program significantly increased mood status(p£¼0.001).

Conclusions : These findings showed that Tai-chi exercise program was effective to increased the ability of lower extremities exercise and mood status in elderly women with osteoarthritis. Therefore, Tai-chi exercise program could be applied as an effective nursing intervention of elderly women with osteoarthritis.
